Route description:

We begin the first section, which starts in Vilafranca del Penedès and follows the southern edge of the route, although it initially heads north towards La Granada and Les Cabanyes. The route continues along tracks and paths through vineyards until, after passing Pacs del Penedès, we reach Santa Margarida i els Monjos, one of the points where the major transport routes crossing the Penedès region intersect.

Until we cross the railway line, we have views of Peyafort Castle, one of the most emblematic heritage sites in the Alt Penedès. With almost ten centuries of history, the architectural complex of Penyafort Castle bears witness to the evolution of a territory that, on a local scale, has witnessed some of the most significant events in the history of Catalonia We alternated between asphalt and bike paths, passing by CIARGA, a unique and important museum dedicated to aviation and the Spanish Civil War. It’s located in the Serral area, within the former Republican airfield of Els Monjos, which was part of the “El Vesper de la Gloriosa”. As we skirt this southern boundary towards Castellet Castle, and after crossing the Foix River for the first time, we travelled along a charming, paved country road, with vineyards as a backdrop. A stop in Castellet is a must. This emblematic village overlooks the castle perched above the reservoir: castle, village, and reservoir create a stunning scene, like a great oasis complementing the beauty of the surrounding area.

Here begins the southernmost part of the route. Good tracks and paved country roads lead to Sant Jaume dels Domenys. The route passes through L’Arboç, notable for its Giralda tower, and Banyeres del Penedès, with its climb to the castle, offering panoramic views of the Penedès region. The final section, in Sant Jaume dels Domenys, provides a welcome break: we enter through the industrial park to see the Els Arcs aqueduct, a fine example of late Roman architecture.
