Route:

Via Augusta Penedès: Vilafranca del Penedès – Els Monjos (Stage 5)

Although all indications suggest that the original route of the Via Augusta followed the current N-340 highway, an alternative, less trafficked, and more rural route is proposed, skirting the westernmost part of the Olèrdola Natural Park.

Route description:

From the Vilafranca train station, the route heads towards the Moja road, where it utilizes the cycle path that leads to Moja (Olèrdola).

In Moja, the route passes through the church square, right next to the 10th-century Moja tower and the Romanesque chapel of Sant Cugat de Moja. Nearby are notable buildings such as the Modernista-style Casa Barber and the Noucentista-style Casa Batlle. Shortly after leaving Moja along the Penyafel road, the route reaches the farmhouse of the same name, a former castle transformed into a farmhouse in the 17th century. Right next to it is the 11 th-century chapel of Santa Maria de Penyafel. At this point, the gravel route continues along the Penyafel road to Santa Margarida i els Monjos. Located between the farmhouse and the chapel, a trail begins with some fairly technical sections due to large slabs of stone, roots, and a few small steps where mountain bikers will need to be careful.

Once inside Olèrdola Natural Park, the route follows tracks through pine forests bordering vineyards, before descending again towards Santa Margarida i els Monjos, entering via the cemetery road. The route ends at the Santa Margarida i els Monjos train station. To continue to the next stage, just past the cemetery, turn left at the Uniland cement factory.
