La Quadra,
space for traditional dances
and the major festivities/als of the municipality

La Quadra is the space for the traditional dances and festes majors (major feasts / festivities / festivals) of the municipality. The facility was inaugurated on 5 July 2019. The old stable of Mas Catarro was recovered and museumized with the aim of achieving a facility for the conservation and dissemination of the local heritage and traditional culture

Covering an area of 144 m2, la Quadra exhibits many of the elements of the traditional ‘seguici’ or retinue. There are the giants and the ‘little giants’, the dragons, the big heads and the various dances: ribbons, gypsies, devils, tambourines, sleigh bells, Serrallonga, shepherds, sticks, barrel hoops and dance of the Foix.

The exhibition is rounded off with audiovisual and digital resources with the music and videos of the festes and a guide with information on all the dances of the festes majors. La Quadra becomes a meeting place for cultural entities and is open to visits, especially for schools.

The municipality’s three Festes Majors

Festa Major at els Monjos

The Festa Major at els Monjos is held every year around 20 July in honour of Santa Margarida.

It is organized by the Festivities Commission, with the collaboration of the Town Council and many entities. Among others, the La Margaridoia Cultural Society also organizes many events. This centennial entity has an outstanding programme of activities. Historically, it was the backbone of the festivities at the heart of els Monjos, but with the recovery of the democratic municipalities, in the early 1980s, the Festivities Commission became the cradle of the organization, coordination and management of the summer Festes, from the perspective of participation, mainstreaming and diversity, so that the festivities could become yet more popular.

Every year, the Festa Major lays on numerous folkloric and traditional activities that are coordinated by the Festivities Commission with all participating associations and entities.

A string of firecrackers announces the start of festes, before they are officially proclaimed open. The ‘cercavila’ parades, the typical dances and the ‘correfoc’ fire running represent the tradition of the folkloric elements and dances, where groups from els Monjos and from la Ràpita meet. The Night of Fire, organized by the Monjos Spantus devils’ dance group, brings the festivities to a close in the form of fire and light.

The winter festes majors are celebrated every year around 17 January in honour of Sant Antoni Abat. The festivities are organized by the La Margaridoia Cultural Society, with the collaboration of the Town Council, and every year they organize a communal dinner, dances, proclamation and various activities.

Festa Major of la Ràpita

The Festa Major of la Ràpita is celebrated every year around the first weekend of August in honour of Sant Domènec de Guzmán.

The Festa Major of la Ràpita is celebrated every year around the first weekend of August in honour of Sant Domènec de Guzmán.
It is organized by the la Ràpita Cultural and Recreational Centre (CCRR), a centennial entity, with the collaboration of the Town Council and various associations and other entities of the town. Each year there are numerous folkloric and traditional activities, and also the popular folkloric elements and dances from both La Ràpita and els Monjos offer their ‘correfocs’ fire running, parades and dances. As a distinguishing feature, la Ràpita devils’ dance organizes La Fogardera, a festival of fire and light that takes place on the Sunday of the Festa Major.

The winter Festa Major of la Ràpita is held every year around 23 January in honour of Saint Raymond of Penyafort. It is organized by la Ràpita Cultural and Recreational Centre and every year a communal dinner is held, as well as dances and various other activities.

Cal Rubió Festa Major

The Festa Major of Cal Rubió is celebrated every year around 12 October in honour of the Our Lady of the Pillar.

The festival is organized by the centenary entity Cal Rubió Cultural and Recreational Centre, known as The Society, created in 1907 initially as the Brotherhood. It is the space for the town’s social and cultural meetings and, with the collaboration of the Town Council, it organizes the Festa Major, which every year lays on a number of popular folkloric and traditional activities, which also enjoy the participation of the folkloric elements and traditional dances of both els Monjos and la Ràpita.
