THE FOOTPRINTS OF THE ‘HIVE’

Combined visit to the CIARGA and Serral air raid shelter + Nadal Cellars

This activity combines the CIARGA with a visit to the Nadal Cellars where there are still remains of the old Sabanell airfield that, together with that of els Monjos, was part of the so-called Vesper de la Gloriosa (Hive of the Glorious).

Description

As a result of the collaboration between Santa Margarida i els Monjos Town Council and Nadal cellars, we present a sensory experience with content, a pairing activity that combines the historical memory, oenology and gastronomy of the Penedès.

The activity sets off from the Interpretation Centre of Republican Aviation and Air Warfare (CIARGA) and the Serral air raid shelter in Santa Margarida i els Monjos, a unique, benchmark museographic facility, where we will discover the mark left on the municipality by the Civil War and, in particular, Republican aviation, with the construction of the airfield, the aircraft assembly workshops and one of the best preserved shelters.

Then we will go to Nadal cellars where, still present among the vineyards, we will discover the remains of the old Sabanell airfield that, together with that of els Monjos, was part of the network known as Vesper de la Gloriosa (Hive of the Glorious). Here we will get to know the history of the winery, we will visit the cellar and the old warehouse used as a hangar during the war, and a wine tasting session will be offered, all in the intimate setting of the farm, in the midst of the unmistakable Penedès landscape.

AIR WARFARE REMEMBRANCE

CIARGA + Penyafort Castle combined activity

During this visit we will embark on a long journey through time, starting with the Catalan reconquest, to continue with the implementation of the Catholic counter-reform, the confiscations and the industrial revolution, until the outbreak of the Civil War in 1936 and the subsequent arrival of the first American tourists.

Description

During the Civil War part of Penyafort Castle-Convent was confiscated by the republican army and converted into a prison. The church was transformed into a community cell where the soldiers of the Fascist troops linked to aviation were kept imprisoned and the cloister was used as a prisoner’s yard. The prison, which was active until January 1939, was located next to the airfield of Santa Margarida i els Monjos and was part of the set of facilities built by Republican aviators in the Penedès to combat the bombings and defend the front.

With this combined activity, we propose you get to know three key spaces to understand the events, protagonists and consequences of aerial war in the municipality of Santa Margarida i els Monjos: The remains of the old aviators’ prison at Penyafort Castle, the old els Monjos airfield with a visit to the CIARGA, and the Serral anti-aircraft shelter that, with its 100 metres of underground gallery, protected pilots and airfield personnel from bombing.

Meeting point: Penyafort Castle Information Centre

Penyafort Castle is located in the south of the municipality of Santa Margarida i els Monjos, bordering onto the course of the Foix river, in close proximity to a number of industries.

It is an architectural ensemble dating from the eleventh century that includes elements of different construction styles. In its beginnings it was a defensive tower, the old fortified Penyafort manor house, later the order of the Dominicans founded a convent and a church, and finally it became the building that we can enjoy today, a monument representative of the leisure spaces of the Catalan industrial bourgeoisie of the late nineteenth century.

The exceptionally extensive complex has a large entrance courtyard in front of the main façade, the single-nave church, and six side chapels, a circular tower and the convent quarters of a castle of these characteristics.
What is included?
Guided tour and sampling of three convent meals, accompanied by wine or must (grape juice).

PENYAFORT CASTLE AND ITS NATURAL SURROUNDINGS

Visit to the castle and discovery of its natural surroundings

We suggest you go on a historical tour with the guided visit to the areas open to the public and finish by following one or more of the routes through its natural surroundings, located within the Foix Park.

Description
Penyafort Castle and its natural surroundings

Would you like to discover what is hiding behind the walls of this emblematic building with almost a thousand years of history and take a walk through its surroundings?

We suggest you go on a historical tour with the guided visit to the areas open to the public and finish by following one or more of the routes through its natural surroundings, located within the Foix Park.

The architectural ensemble of Penyafort Castle bears witness to the evolution of a territory that, on a local scale, concentrates some of the most significant events in the History of Catalonia.
During the 11th century at Olèrdola Castle, a watchtower was erected to protect the land conquered from the Muslims of Al-Andalus. Since then, a church, a convent, a residence belonging to the industrial bourgeoisie and even a prison dependent on republican aviation during the Civil War, have been added to the original fortification giving rise to today’s rich, polyhedral architectural ensemble.

After the guided visit we will invite you to take one of the nature routes surrounding the castle. We can give you guidance according to your needs.

These trails will lead you to discover truly surprising landscapes, such as Sant Llorenç valley, where classic elements of Atlantic and Mediterranean vegetation coexist; the surroundings of Penyafort Castle, with a fantastic poplar wood bordering the river; or the ones that serve to follow in the steps of the roadmen of yesteryear who travelled between the castles of Olèrdola, Penyafort and Castellet, among others.

*The activity includes an information brochure with nature trails to go on around the castle. Download the brochure.

WARTIME MEALS

Guided tour + taster

Through the visit to the CIARGA and the Serral air raid shelter we will look at the effects that the construction of the airfield and the aerial war caused in the day-to-day life of its inhabitants.

Description
Guided tour + taster

Food and subsistence in the Penedès during the Civil War
Els Monjos airfield transformed, yet further, the life of a population that was already suffering the effects of war.

The expropriation of crop fields and vineyards by the republican army reduced the possibilities of obtaining and distributing food around the municipality. The battle of the egg, the Garraf grass pea and the organization of communal canteens like el Xiringuito, became strategies to overcome the difficulties imposed by the conflict.

Through the visit to the CIARGA and the Serral air raid shelter we will look at the effects that the construction of the airfield and the aerial war caused in the day-to-day life of its inhabitants. The activity will end with a degustation that recreates the ubiquitous grass peas of the Civil War.
