Festa Major at els Monjos

The summer Festa Major at els Monjos is held every year around 20 July in honour of Santa Margarida.

It is organized by the Festivities Commission, with the collaboration of the Town Council and many entities. Among others, the La Margaridoia Cultural Society also organizes many events. This centennial entity has an outstanding programme of activities. Historically, it was the backbone of the festivities at the heart of els Monjos, but with the recovery of the democratic municipalities, in the early 1980s, the Festivities Commission became the cradle of the organization, coordination and management of the summer Festes, from the perspective of participation, mainstreaming and diversity, so that the festivities could become yet more popular.

Every year, the Festa Major lays on numerous folkloric and traditional activities that are coordinated by the Festivities Commission with all participating associations and entities.

A string of firecrackers announces the start of festes, before they are officially proclaimed open. The ‘cercavila’ parades, the typical dances and the ‘correfoc’ fire running represent the tradition of the folkloric elements and dances, where groups from els Monjos and from la Ràpita meet. The Night of Fire, organized by the Monjos Spantus devils’ dance group, brings the festivities to a close in the form of fire and light.

The winter festes majors are celebrated every year around 17 January in honour of Sant Antoni Abat. The festivities are organized by the La Margaridoia Cultural Society, with the collaboration of the Town Council, and every year they organize a communal dinner, dances, proclamation and various activities.
